kids and dog asleep under blanketCarpets are one of those things that can make a house feel like home. But if they become blemished and soiled too often that they can feel like a burden to some homeowners. It does not have to be that way! A few tips and tricks can make the most of what a carpet offers minus that hassle of maintaining it. Are you new to carpet maintenance? Keep reading!

1.) Place walk off mats on the doorway.

Walk off mats are a good way to make sure that anyone entering the house will not bring dirt into it. They are made from synthetic and slightly abrasive materials, which make them excellent at removing dirt from the sole of shoes. Those entering the house can simply wipe their footwear on those mats before walking in.

Having a walk off mat is not an end in itself though. Homeowners should also clean a mat regularly to it does not become a source of dirt itself. It only takes a minute or two to clean a walk off mat due to its non-absorbent nature.

2.) Clean soiled spots right away.

Spots can easily be removed if they are treated right away. Do not wait for them to absorb into the carpet and become permanent blemishes. Even carpets tagged as “stain resistant” will have to be cleaned immediately if soiled.

Most liquid spots can be removed with an absorbent rag. Simply blot with a slight, downward pressure and let the cloth absorb the stain. Do not rub as it will only spread the stain or damage the surface. Use soap or environment-friendly carpet solutions to treat spots. Do not use bleach as it will only discolor your carpet.

3.) Vacuum regularly.

Homeowners are often advised to vacuum regularly. But how frequent is “regularly”? Generally, a carpet only needs to be vacuumed twice a week. Regular vacuuming can prevent the build up and absorption of dirt, which can become stubborn blemishes later on. You can also take a hint from the maintenance instructions of your carpet. You can find detailed instructions included in your purchase.

4.) Use cleaning solutions with care.

There are many products on the grocery aisle that tout themselves as excellent carpet cleaners. That may be true but only if they are used properly. If used too little, they can be ineffective. If used too much, they can leave permanent blemishes on the carpet. More importantly, there are products that have adverse health and environmental impacts. They can even harm pets!

5.) Do not use detergent.

Detergents are good for general washing but they may wear off a carpet. They can also leave residues which easily absorb soil and stain.

If you feel uncertain about the use of carpet solutions, it is best to request a professional to do the cleaning. They can not only help you clean your carpet thoroughly, they can even give you some advice on how you can properly clean a carpet yourself.
